Crypto scammers hijack Australian news

Crypto scammers recently hijacked an Australian news outlet’s YouTube channel to broadcast a hoax. The country’s broadcaster, 7News, encountered a significant cybersecurity breach when its YouTube channel was taken over by crypto scammers. This incident involved live streaming a deep fake video featuring Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, discussing cryptocurrency—an event that drew widespread attention. As Crypto scammers hijack Australian news outlet’s YouTube channels, it reminds us of the need for media outlets to ensure top cyber security practices.

The livestream on 7News’ YouTube channel, typically used for news updates, was manipulated to resemble Tesla’s official channel. Viewers were exposed to a deep fake simulation of Elon Musk promoting a fraudulent crypto scheme. The fabricated Musk, generated using artificial intelligence, falsely claimed to be giving away cryptocurrency with promises to double any funds sent to specified addresses.

Upon discovering the breach, Seven Network promptly launched an investigation and communicated about the incident through a statement to the Sydney Morning Herald. A spokesperson acknowledged the abnormality and assured them that efforts were underway in collaboration with YouTube to resolve the situation swiftly.

The spokesperson stated, “Seven is investigating and working with YouTube to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”

The Tactics Used as Crypto Scammers Hijack Australian News Outlet’s Channel

At its peak, the fraudulent streams on the compromised channel attracted approximately 150,000 viewers. However, questions arose regarding the authenticity of these viewer numbers, as some may have been artificially inflated.

The perpetrators behind the hijacking directed viewers to a website where they could allegedly donate cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and Dogecoin (DOGE). Despite the enticing claims, the addresses listed on the website held a relatively modest sum, totalling just over $11,000.

Elon Musk’s popularity makes him a prime target for such scams. Similar incidents in the past have seen over 35 YouTube livestreams featuring fake Musks promoting “double-your-money” schemes, often coinciding with significant events such as SpaceX launches.

The cyber attack on 7News’ YouTube channel occurred during a period of organizational challenges at Seven West Media, the parent company. The company had announced significant job cuts affecting marketing roles just days earlier. This context highlights the vulnerability of media organizations during operational transitions and underlines the potential impact of external threats.

This latest crypto news about the 7News YouTube channel serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by crypto scammers to exploit digital platforms and influential public figures. As investigations continue and remedial actions are pursued, it remains critical for media entities and online platforms to enhance cybersecurity measures to protect against such malicious intrusions.

By maintaining vigilance and implementing robust security protocols, stakeholders can mitigate the risks posed by cyber threats in an increasingly digital landscape.

The incident involving the hijacking of 7News’ YouTube channel by crypto scammers underscores digital platforms’ vulnerabilities in the modern era. As technology continues to advance, so do the methods used by malicious actors to exploit these platforms for fraudulent purposes.

Conclusion

In recent years, deep fake technology has emerged as a particularly concerning tool in the hands of scammers. Deep fakes utilize artificial intelligence to create highly realistic simulations of individuals, often public figures, saying or doing things they never actually did.

The allure of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum (BTC ETH), and NFTs has made them frequent targets for such scams. These digital currencies, known for their decentralized nature and potential for rapid value appreciation, attract a global audience of investors and enthusiasts. Scammers exploit this interest by creating fake personas to promote fraudulent schemes under the guise of legitimate news or endorsements.

The response from Seven Network and YouTube underscores the importance of swift action and collaboration in mitigating such cyber threats. While efforts are made to restore normalcy and prevent future breaches, the incident serves as a cautionary tale for other media entities and online platforms to fortify their defences against similar attacks.

As crypto scammers hijack Australian news YouTube channel, the BIT Journal states that regulatory bodies’ roles in overseeing digital platforms and combating cybercrime will become increasingly crucial.
