MetaMask will temporarily store IP addresses. Dan Finlay, the founder of the popular crypto wallet MetaMask, explained that they do not use IP addresses. However, he said that temporary addresses are stored even if they are not necessary.

  • Finley said: “We don’t use IP addresses even to store them temporarily, which they don’t want to be, as we don’t use them for anything.”

This comes after it was revealed by ConsenSys, MetaMask’s parent company, that Infura collects both their IP addresses and their Ethereum addresses, thus combining the two for GDPR purposes.

“We don’t start [collecting IP addresses], we’re really trying to reduce all the stored PII,” Finlay added in his explanation while confirming that “it’s GDPR compliant [that they’re collecting] IPs].”

According to Finlay, issuing a check and balance is as easy as a batch processing request. He argues that MetaMask “does nothing wrong” and adds that “everyone is projecting their worst fears.”

MetaMask cannot function without user data

The founder of ConsenSys, Joseph Lubin explains that the service cannot be provided if the user’s address and IP address contact Infura or even the blockchain through their browser. Infura, a node infrastructure provider, is the main node of MetaMask. So, by default, Meta Mask will store your IP address.

  • He said: “First, the BLOCKCHAIN ADDRESS needs to be part of the request sent to the BLOCKCHAIN. THE IP ADDRESS IS PRINTED TO PROVIDE A RESPONSE TO THE REQUEST.”

However, MyEtherWallet (MEW) has stated that it does not track IP addresses, saying, “We have never collected any traceable information from our users.”

There is a browser add-on for MEW called Enkrypt, the platform appears to run on its own node configuration. In addition, in recent news, Metamask has appointed NFBank, a non-fungible token (NFT) wallet manager, which is a cryptocurrency software wallet that enables communication on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain.
