Nigerian Prison Doctor Detained Over Binance Executive’s Health Concerns

The health issues of Tigray Gambaryan, an executive at Binance, have led to drastic legal actions and family appeals in Nigeria. The Federal High Court in Abuja, through Justice Emeka Nwite, issued an immediate bench warrant for Dr. Abraham Ehizojie, a Nigerian Prison Doctor at the Kuje Correctional Centre. The heat of the situation crescendoed when Ehizojie, the Nigerian prison doctor, failed to produce a medical report for Gambaryan; he also failed to appear in court as ordered. This case has led to debates and conversations about the implications of Ehizojie’s actions.

Bench Warrant for Prison Doctor

Justice Nwite of the Abuja Federal High Court previously issued an instruction to the Nigerian Correctional Service to provide Gambarayan’s medical report. A process which should come with no stress or delay at all. The Abuja Federal High Court stressed the importance of compliance. The recent court sessions captured Mark Mordi, Gamabaryan’s lawyer confirming that the order had not been followed, signifying a breach in compliance. A prison official confirmed delivering the court order to the doctor but noted his absence in court. This shows Ehizojie’s direct disregard for the court order.

Ekene Iheanacho counsel for The Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC) expressed his concern and surprise for the medical officer’s allegedly intentional absence. Mordi immediately requested a bench warrant for the doctor, and he further demanded that Gambaryan be remanded to a hospital for proper and immediate medical diagnosis. This was demanded as it was noticed that Gambaryan suffered severe back pain, and his health was significantly deteriorating.

Mordi remarked on the matter, saying, “My client came in here in a wheelchair. He has been complaining of back pain. We need to be careful of the life in our hands,”

The statement confirms Gambaryan’s state of health and the severity of the situation caused by the medical officer.

Yuki, Gambaryan’s wife, expressed deep concern over her husband’s deteriorating health. The whole event and her husband’s condition have left her health broken. She remarked, “I am heartbroken to see my once fit and healthy husband reduced to such a condition. This ordeal has taken a severe toll on him, leaving him in so much pain that he can hardly walk… I am pleading with the Nigerian authorities to urgently release my husband on humanitarian grounds.”

In addition to the health concerns and medical issues, Gambaryan faces serious charges alongside Binance for money laundering and violation of foreign exchange protocols, charges that have serious implications. Regardless of these legal hurdles and looming imbroglio, his family and legal team put all hands on deck, pushing for his immediate treatment and release.

In light of the court ruling, a bench warrant has been issued for Nigerian prison doctor, Ehizojie, by Justice Nwite, who criticised the disregard for court orders. The court ordered Gambaryan to be taken to Nizamiye for a comprehensive 24-hour medical check-up under heavy security. The case has been adjourned for October 11.

Binance was accused by the Nigerian government, alongside its executives Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, of conspiring to conceal the origins of $35,400,000 in financial transactions for supposedly illegal financial activities in Nigeria. Apart from the charges, Binance faces a separate lawsuit from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for tax evasion.

The Wrap Up

The situation surrounding Tigran Gambaryan’s health concerns highlights the ongoing legal challenges and humanitarian appeals faced by the Binance executive. The actions taken by the Nigerian authorities, including the bench warrant for the Nigerian prison doctor and the order for Gambaryan’s medical treatment, underscore the severity of the case. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring Gambaryan’s well-being and addressing the serious allegations against Binance and its executives.
