The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin (BTC), has been one of the most enduring mysteries in the world of cryptocurrency. Now, a new HBO documentary claims it will finally solve the enigma. If the documentary delivers on its promise, the revelation of Satoshi’s identity could send shockwaves through the financial world.

The Mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto

It is estimated that Satoshi Nakamoto controls around $67 billion worth of Bitcoin, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. As excitement builds ahead of the documentary’s release on October 8, a new prediction pool on Polymarket is stirring up speculation about Satoshi’s identity. Four names have emerged as the most likely candidates.

Polymarket’s Surprising Bet: Who Is Bitcoin’s Creator?

According to Polymarket’s odds, the four most likely contenders to be Satoshi Nakamoto are Len Sassaman, Hal Finney, Adam Back, and Nick Szabo. Each of these figures has left a significant mark on the world of cryptography and digital privacy, making them prime suspects in the ongoing mystery.

Len Sassaman: The Top Contender?

Polymarket’s odds currently place Len Sassaman as the leading candidate, with a 50% chance of being Satoshi Nakamoto. Sassaman was deeply connected to the cypherpunk movement, which emphasized decentralization and resistance to government surveillance—core principles of Bitcoin.

Some researchers point to Sassaman’s use of British English and his cryptographic expertise as key evidence. His close connection with Hal Finney, another leading candidate, further strengthens this theory. However, Sassaman’s untimely death in 2011 makes it impossible to confirm his identity as Satoshi with certainty.

Hal Finney: The First Bitcoin Recipient

Coming in second with an 11% chance, Hal Finney is often mentioned as a potential Satoshi due to his deep involvement in Bitcoin’s early development. He received the first-ever Bitcoin transaction from Satoshi and contributed to the underlying consensus algorithm that powers Bitcoin today.

Although Finney consistently denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, his pivotal role in Bitcoin’s history and his passing in 2014 have kept this theory alive. Many believe that his close ties to Satoshi and his early involvement in the project make him a strong candidate.

Adam Back: A Technical Pioneer

Adam Back, the creator of Hashcash—a Proof-of-Work system referenced in Bitcoin’s whitepaper—holds a 6% chance of being the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto. Back’s extensive knowledge of cryptography and his contributions to the field make him a plausible candidate.

Despite being linked to Satoshi, Back has repeatedly denied these claims. In fact, he even testified against Craig Wright, who infamously claimed to be Satoshi. Nonetheless, some in the crypto community still view Back as a strong contender due to his technical expertise and impact on Bitcoin’s development.

Nick Szabo: The Creator of Bit Gold

Nick Szabo, the inventor of Bit Gold, rounds out the list of potential Satoshi Nakamoto candidates. Szabo’s work on decentralized currencies and time-stamped data bears striking similarities to Bitcoin, fueling speculation that he may be the man behind the pseudonym.

Despite his repeated denials, Szabo’s writing style and early work on Bit Gold continue to keep him in the conversation about Satoshi’s true identity.
