The blockchain space has recently been able to grab hold of a million new players thanks to the easy usability of games like Notcoin and Hamster Kombat. But Tuesday may have been a turning point for the sector. Gunzilla Games has launched the early access of the its battle royal game ‘Off the grid’, available on core PlayStation 5 and the Epic game store.
The early Previews suggest that the game is packed with crazy graphics and gameplay of AAA standards. In this free-to-play game, Gunzilla intends to enable its users to sell any game purchases they make, regardless if their implementation occurs on Playstation, Xbox or PC.

This positions the game to become the first PlayStation and Xbox title with on-chain features, giving players more freedom in managing their in-game assets. Player-owned items are supported by Gunzilla’s GUNZ blockchain.
“GUNZ, built on a custom Avalanche L1, gives game developers the tools to create player-driven economies, allowing players full ownership of their in-game assets as tradeable NFTs,” the statement says.
However, it’s still unknown when Gunzilla plans to make the full trading features for Off the Grid NFTs available to players.
‘Off the grid’ Backbone Gunzilla Integrates with OpenSea
In the month of April, OpenSea, an NFT marketplace, suspended its operations for a while since it teamed up with Gunzilla for the purpose of implementing its GUNZ blockchain. Gunzilla Games explained at the time that the development would enhance regulation compliance regarding the market for the game’s NFTs.
The system enables all players and OpenSea users to conduct transactions on NFT items housed in any game that is based on the GUNZ blockchain and uses GUN token as the only currency. Neill Blomkamp, a famed director and co-founder of Gunzilla whose creative director was more active on X, touted the early access game called Off the Grid on Tuesday and included the game’s teaser link in the post.
Back in January 2020, Gunzilla raised $30 million in a venture capital round led by CoinFund and Avalanche’s Blizzard Fund. Recently, in July this year, crypto investment company Delphi Ventures announced that it had become the largest validator in the Gunzilla ecosystem as well as the GUNZ blockchain ecosystem.
Deep Dive into ‘Off the Grid’ Crypto Battle Royale Features
While the game shares similarities with other battle royale hits like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and PUBG, it has some standout features. One of these is the ability for players to equip robotic limbs and switch them out during a match, allowing them to gain new abilities on the fly.
This early access version isn’t the complete Off the Grid experience, but it gives players a preview of what’s in store. The free-to-play game features a large city map and a 60-player mode called “Extraction Royale,” where teams of three fight to be the last ones standing. A big question surrounding Off the Grid has been how it will incorporate crypto features on consoles, especially since Sony and Microsoft haven’t yet embraced other blockchain games on their platforms. And even now, the details remain uncertain.
The game features in-game items that are priced in the GUN token. Players can earn GUN by completing missions within the game, but currently, there’s no way to buy additional GUN directly through the game. The GUN token itself hasn’t launched on the Avalanche mainnet yet, so that level of integration isn’t available in the game right now. However, a testnet version of the token has been used during earlier playtests.
A New Era for Blockchain Gaming Begins
Off the Grid represents a major innovation in blockchain games, defining new limits for player ownership and in-game economies. In teaming with OpenSea and fully utilizing the benefits of the GUNZ blockchain, Gunzilla is not only raising the level of gameplay experience but also giving a completely new meaning to owning assets inside digital rooms. For players who get to experience this living battle royale, there is a future where all the purchases made inside this box hold real-world value and can be shared with you. Off the Grid is poised to pave the way for a new generation of console games that utilize blockchain via its revolutionary attributes and partnerships. Blockchain Gaming at it’s the future of gaming is here — and it’s on the blockchain.
