Bitcoin was trading near $80,500 after Wednesday’s Fed rate decision kept US borrowing costs at 3.75%-4.00%. One analyst said markets had priced the hold but not its hawkish tone. Market pricing now leans heavily toward a December hike, and analysts quoted by Cointelegraph say Treasury yields, the dollar and upcoming inflation data could determine BTC’s next move.
Why it matters
The Fed held, but its statement said inflation “remains elevated.” Before the meeting, CME FedWatch put the chance of a hike at less than 10%, according to CNBC. After it, figures cited by Cointelegraph and Admiral Markets put the odds of a December increase at roughly 78% to 85%. One analyst argues that with the risk-free rate near 4%, Bitcoin has to compete with it.
What we know about the Fed rate decision
On October 28, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee voted 10-2 to leave the federal funds target range at 3.75%-4.00%, according to the official FOMC statement. The text said that “inflation remains elevated” and that “the Committee will deliver price stability.”
Both dissents pushed in the same direction. Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack wanted a quarter-point hike, Yahoo Finance reported. Chair Kevin Warsh said politics played “no role” in the call, which came ahead of the US midterm elections.
What changed in the Fed rate decision statement
CNBC noted that the statement upgraded its description of economic activity from “solid” in September to “expanding at a strong pace.” It also said the Fed was waiting for the “accumulation of more information” before acting again.
The pause followed a quarter-point hike in September. It also came against a backdrop of weak hiring (just 29,000 jobs added in September) and mixed inflation data, per Raisin’s breakdown.

What is still unclear
Warsh declined to say whether the Fed would raise rates at the end of the year. That makes the December 9 decision, which comes with new projections, the next real test.
Market pricing isn’t settled either. Cointelegraph cited CME FedWatch data showing a 78.4% chance of a quarter-point hike by the December 8-9 meeting. Admiral Markets put December odds closer to 85%, for a move to 4.00%-4.25%. These probabilities are market estimates, not commitments, and they can change as new data arrives.
Policymakers also have to weigh weak hiring against inflation the statement still calls elevated, so the next data releases could carry extra weight.
How markets and analysts reacted
Bitcoin was choppy around the announcement. Before the Fed rate decision it briefly jumped to $81,687, then dropped below $80,500. It climbed back to about $81,000 within minutes of the release, Bitcoin.com News reported. Coinglass data showed $167 million in crypto liquidations, with $110 million of that in short positions.
In traditional markets, the 10-year Treasury yield rose about 5 basis points to 5.04% by 15:25 ET, while gold fell about 0.4% to $4,058, according to Admiral Markets. For context on how the two assets compare, see our analysis of Bitcoin vs gold as a macro hedge.

Prices are from CoinGecko as of 01:45 UTC on October 29, 2026. Bitcoin’s 24-hour range was $80,334 to $81,698. It sits about 36% below its all-time high of $126,080 from October 6, 2025. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 51, or “Neutral,” on October 29.
“Markets had the hold priced, but not the hawkish tone,” Iggy Ioppe, chief investment officer at Theo, said in comments reported by Cointelegraph. According to The Crypto Times, he argued that with headline inflation at 3.7%, the Fed is still behind. In his view, that keeps the risk-free rate near 4% into December, and Bitcoin has to compete with it.
Bitget analyst Lewis Huang, also cited by The Crypto Times, took a technical view. He said a sustained recovery above $80,000 could open a range toward $85,000, while failing to hold that level would keep downside risks in focus. We looked at that level in our recent Bitcoin price outlook around $85,000.

What it means for investors
The picture is mixed. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in net inflows of $110 million on October 26 and $176 million on October 27, according to KuCoin News. That suggests demand for the funds held up in the days before the meeting. Flows can reverse, though, as our coverage of earlier ETF outflow periods that weighed on BTC shows.
History doesn’t offer a clean rule either. In July 2026 the Fed held at 3.5%-3.75% in a hawkish 9-3 vote, and Bitcoin held near $64,000 through that decision, CoinDesk reported. BTC trades higher now, even though the Fed has raised rates once since then.
The risks are concrete. Crypto prices can move sharply on a single data release, and the $167 million in liquidations Coinglass reported shows how quickly leveraged positions can be wiped out. Analysts point to Treasury yields, the dollar and inflation data as the factors to watch. A December hike looks likely on current market pricing, but it is not certain. The analyst levels above are scenarios, not forecasts, and nothing in this article is financial advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any asset.
Bottom line
The Fed held rates and flagged elevated inflation, and market pricing now leans toward a December hike, even though Warsh would not commit to one. Bitcoin’s 24-hour move was small. The next inflation and jobs data, plus the December 9 decision, are the signals to watch from here.
