Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, reported a record $20.91 billion in operating income on October 29, 2026, making these MicroStrategy Q3 earnings the largest in its history. Almost all of it was an unrealized gain on its bitcoin. But the metric management asks investors to watch moved the other way.
The change in bitcoin per share, which Strategy tracks as “BTC Yield”, stood at negative 3.7% for 2026 as of October 25. That’s despite a 26% rise in the firm’s coin count since January.
- Record profit: Operating income hit $20.91 billion, up from $3.89 billion in Q3 2025. Net income was $19.53 billion, or $44.75 per diluted share, with $19.12 billion attributable to common stockholders.
- Holdings: 848,517 BTC as of October 25, bought for $64.02 billion at an average of about $75,446 per coin.
- Revenue miss: Total revenue fell 3% year over year to $125.43 million, below the Visible Alpha consensus of $127.20 million.
- BTC Yield in dollars: The “BTC $ Gain” was negative $2.03 billion year to date, based on an October 23 bitcoin price of $81,200.
- CFO exit: Andrew Kang leaves on November 5, and COO Reza Virasteh takes over as CFO on January 1.

Why a record profit came with less bitcoin per share
Under current US accounting rules, Strategy marks its bitcoin to market every quarter, so price swings flow straight into earnings whether or not coins are sold. BeInCrypto noted that the same rules produced a loss of more than $8 billion in Q2, when bitcoin per share was still up 4.5% for the year.
BeInCrypto ties the decline since then to funding. New common shares only add bitcoin per share when the stock trades above the value of the coins behind it. Strategy raised $21.23 billion in 2026, including $5.41 billion from at-the-market sales of MSTR stock in Q3, but spent $14.33 billion on bitcoin year to date, the 8-K exhibit filed with the SEC shows.
A big slice went elsewhere. Strategy repurchased 20,980,508 STRC preferred shares for $2.04 billion, at an average of $97.39 against a $100 stated amount. It also built a $5.07 billion dollar reserve that it says covers 3.4 years of dividend and interest obligations. According to the release, as reported by Bitcoin Magazine and BeInCrypto, Strategy sold roughly $431.8 million of bitcoin this year to help fund dividends and buybacks. KuCoin News reported that $348.6 million of those sales came in Q3: $239.9 million for preferred dividends and $108.6 million for STRC repurchases. BeInCrypto added that weekly bitcoin purchases dropped 84% in two weeks earlier this month as buybacks took priority.
Reactions from management and the market
Kang called Q3 operating income “the largest ever in Strategy’s history” and said the company “increased our bitcoin holdings by 26% year-to-date in a challenging bitcoin market.” CEO Phong Le focused on the preferred stock instead.
“Strategy demonstrated its commitment to returning STRC to health.” (Phong Le, CEO, in the Q3 release)
According to BeInCrypto, MSTR had already closed down 2.4% at $141.62 before the results came out. After hours, TradingView reported the stock was down 1.00% at $140.20, pointing to the revenue miss and the CFO exit.
Bitcoin has since slipped below $80,000, and the broader market was in the red early on October 30 (UTC).
| Asset | Price (USD) | 24h change | 1-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | $77,690 | -4.37% | -29.78% |
| Ethereum (ETH) | $2,241.14 | -4.86% | -42.69% |
| Solana (SOL) | $95.22 | -7.04% | -51.06% |
Data from CoinGecko as of 00:13 UTC on October 30, 2026. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 30 (“Fear”) that day. By our math, 848,517 BTC at $77,690 is worth about $65.9 billion, only around $1.9 billion above Strategy’s $64.02 billion cost basis.

What to watch after the MicroStrategy Q3 earnings
The next lever is STRC. Bitcoin Magazine reported that STRC touched $99.99 on Thursday and noted that reaching par would reopen it as a funding source for bitcoin purchases. Strategy hasn’t confirmed it will restart STRC issuance. The board held the STRC dividend rate at 12.00% to support trading near the $100 stated amount. Management said it intends to keep buying back STRC while it trades below par, with about $956.7 million left under the authorization.
STRC’s daily payouts start on November 1, which Le framed as “a natural step toward the tokenized, 24/7/365 financial system.” Strategy expects its preferred distributions to count as a non-taxable return of capital for ten years or more. That is the company’s own expectation, tax rules differ by country, and holders should check with a qualified adviser.
The risks are plain. Under fair-value accounting, if bitcoin ends December below its September 30 level, that decline would flow into Q4 results. Strategy reported a $17.4 billion operating loss in Q4 2025. Bitcoin remains highly volatile, and preferred dividends are ongoing obligations that Strategy has partly funded by selling coins. None of this is a prediction of where MSTR or BTC will trade next.
Frequently asked questions
Why were MicroStrategy Q3 earnings a record?
Bitcoin rallied during the quarter, and Strategy books changes in its coins’ value as profit or loss. That produced a $20.91 billion gain on digital assets, which drove operating income.
What is Strategy’s BTC Yield?
It’s the percentage change in bitcoin per share. As of October 25, 2026, it was negative 3.7% for the year, meaning each share is backed by less bitcoin than in January.
