Zcash Upgrade Targets Faster Blocks Amid Governance Dispute

NU7 is scheduled to shorten Zcash's target block interval.

The Zcash upgrade known as NU7 is planned for around November 5, cutting target block times from 75 seconds to 25. CryptoNews reported on November 3 that the technical changes are arriving amid debate over development funding and Zcash’s future direction.

Why it matters

NU7 changes confirmation timing, transaction-fee allocation and the validity of some older transactions. The upgrade is not yet active, and funds in the original Sprout pool could become unspendable after activation.

What we know

How the Zcash upgrade changes confirmation timing

As of November 3, NU7 had not activated on mainnet. The Zcash Foundation’s release information places activation at block height 3,543,405, around November 5. Zebra 7.0.0, the first stable software release supporting NU7, was released on October 22. Node operators must upgrade to remain on the network’s consensus chain.

Under ZIP 218, the target interval between blocks falls from 75 seconds to 25. That could make the average wait for a first confirmation about three times shorter. CryptoNews says three confirmations could take around 75 seconds instead of nearly four minutes, but target spacing doesn’t guarantee how quickly each transaction will confirm.

The Foundation says daily ZEC issuance will remain unchanged because the per-block reward is divided among more frequent blocks. NU7 also preserves Zcash’s 21 million ZEC supply cap and four-year halving schedule. In a September coinholder poll reported by CoinDesk, nearly 2.4 million ZEC participated, about two-thirds of eligible tokens. Weighted votes supported 25-second blocks by 99.9% and the existing halving schedule by 98.9%.

Node software must support NU7 for operators to stay on the consensus chain.

NU7 also limits shielded transaction activity. CryptoNews says the limits aim to improve network efficiency and protect wallets from spam. Under ZIP 235, 60% of transaction fees will go into a reserve. The Foundation says a portion is scheduled to return as block rewards beginning at mainnet height 8,939,664.

The official NU7 deployment proposal says version 4 transactions become invalid at activation. Funds remaining in the original Sprout pool will then be unspendable, while version 5 and version 6 transactions remain valid. NU7 doesn’t introduce a new transaction format.

What is still unclear

Activation is scheduled for block height 3,543,405, around November 5. Since NU7 was not live on November 3, its operation after activation can’t yet be assessed from mainnet results.

Development funding is a separate debate. CryptoNews reported that Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe proposed ending the automatic allocation of 8% of newly issued ZEC to the Zcash Community Grants program. Bowe said the program already held approximately $125 million after existing commitments. His proposal would direct the allocation to a reserve for future mining rewards. The committee would keep its existing funds and continue distributing grants.

The proposal drew debate after scrutiny of a grant supporting privacy-payment outreach at adult-industry events. Critics questioned the spending, while supporters argued the outreach could introduce privacy technology to people facing financial restrictions. The CryptoNews report on the NU7 upgrade and funding debate describes the disagreement.

The funding debate follows organizational changes. A draft ZIP says ECC’s engineering and product team departed in January 2026 after a dispute with its overseer, Bootstrap. The draft describes the team’s position as constructive discharge and Bootstrap’s position as a disagreement over nonprofit-law and fiduciary obligations. On February 27, Bootstrap’s board said the dispute was resolved, authorized the transfer of Zashi wallet technology and related intellectual property, and said ECC would wind down while the former team continued in a new company.

Zcash Open Development Lab, formed by former ECC staff, announced on March 9 that it had raised more than $25 million in seed funding from participants including Paradigm, a16z crypto, Winklevoss Capital and Coinbase Ventures. Separately, Zcash’s official upgrade page says a critical Orchard soundness vulnerability was discovered in late May. NU6.3, named Ironwood, activated on July 28 at block 3,428,143, restricting Orchard withdrawals through a turnstile and introducing a new shielded pool.

Market context

CryptoNews described recent weakness in ZEC’s price, but the data provided for this report includes neither a ZEC price nor a measured reaction to the November 3 report. It would be unsupported to attribute a token move to NU7. CoinGecko data timestamped 12:13 UTC showed Bitcoin and Ether lower over the 24 hours to that time on November 3:

AssetPrice24-hour change
Bitcoin (BTC)$76,981-1.25%
Ether (ETH)$2,263.77-1.20%

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index was 26, classified as Fear, on November 3. It’s a broad market measure, not a Zcash-specific reading. The September poll records holder support for shorter blocks but doesn’t show how NU7 will perform or predict market demand.

What it means for investors

What to watch after the Zcash upgrade

The proposal defines shorter target intervals, but doesn’t settle questions about adoption or long-term funding. Watch for activation at the planned height and compatible software use by node operators. The deployment proposal says version 4 transactions will become invalid at activation, making funds left in the original Sprout pool unspendable. Version 5 and version 6 transactions remain valid.

The grants proposal would change the allocation of newly issued ZEC while leaving existing committee funds in place. Its outcome could affect project funding as block subsidies decline. The January ECC team departure, the February resolution announced by Bootstrap and July’s NU6.3 changes are separate governance and protocol developments, not evidence of NU7’s eventual market or technical effects.

The clearest documented user risk is losing spendability for funds left in the original Sprout pool after activation. Operators also need compatible node software to remain on the consensus chain. This report is informational and doesn’t provide investment advice.

Bottom line

NU7 is planned to reduce Zcash’s target block interval to 25 seconds while preserving its supply cap and halving schedule. Its effects will become clearer after activation. The community-grants proposal remains a separate funding debate, and the deployment documentation warns that funds still in the original Sprout pool will become unspendable when version 4 transactions are invalidated.
